Hunter Mountain |
-
Hunter Mountain is located in the townships of Hunter and Lexington, just south of the village of Hunter, in Greene County, New York, USA.
-
|
|
-
At approximately 4,040 feet (1,234 m) in elevation, it is the highest peak in the county and the second-highest peak in the Catskill Mountains.
-
Like the Township and the Village, Hunter takes its name from John Hunter, who was a land owner under the Hardenburgh Patent.
-
Hunter mountain is closely associated with skiing, although the ski area takes up only a small portion of the mountain. Hunter Mountain fire tower is located on the summit.

-
The Hunter Mountain Fire Tower has the unique distinction of being the highest fire tower in New York State, a 60' tower standing on top of a 4,040' mountain. It is also only one of a few fire towers to be listed on the National Historic Lookout Register as well as the National Register of Historic Places.
-
Views from the tower include North/South Lakes, the Blackhead Range, the Hudson Valley, and the southern Catskills (including Slide Mt.). The former road (Spruceton Trail) to the tower is the most popular route to the mountain's summit.

There are two incorporated villages, (Hunter and Tannersville) within the Hunter Township. Hunter was incorporated in 1894 and Tannersville in 1895. The Town of Hunter is located in the historic and beautiful northern Catskills, specifically the area known by many as "the mountaintop".
